Lawyers Lend A Hand 2008 Grants Support Chicago Tutor/Mentor Programs

$217k in grants awarded by LAWYERS Lend-a-Hand Program
CHICAGO, ILL. (December 18, 2008)-Twenty-seven outstanding tutor/mentor
programs were awarded $217,000 in grants at the annual Grant Reception of
the Sun-Times Judge Marovitz Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth Program (LAH) on
Wednesday, December 17 at the Chicago Bar Association (CBA). The CBA
originated the program to impact the lives of underprivileged youth through
tutor/mentor programs, and the program benefited from receiving substantial
funds from the late Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz and The Chicago
Sun-Times.
The money will benefit over 2,500 Chicago-area young people from
neighborhoods including Cabrini-Green, Albany Park, West Town, Humboldt
Park, Logan Square, Austin, Belmont-Cragin, Rogers Park, , Hermosa, Uptown,
Edgewater, South Chicago, Pilsen, Lawndale, Little Village, Garfield Park,
Englewood, and Washington Park. Programs serving youth in the surrounding
suburbs of Palatine Township and Evanston also received awards.
In addition to the grants, awards were presented to organizations that make a difference in the lives of Chicago-area children. The "Sun-Times Literacy
Award," which comes with a $10,000 cash award, went to the Cabrini-Green
Tutoring Program, which serves disadvantaged children in the lower grades
and beyond and has previously made the White List of exemplary tutoring and
reading programs. The "Thomas A. Demetrio Award of Excellence," which comes
with a $10,000 award, was presented to Jewish Child and Family Services,
Chicago, which provides mentors to children living in foster care or group
homes. Finally, the "Much Shelist Founders Award", which comes with an
additional $7,000 award, was presented to Inspired Youth Tutoring Program,
which works with students on the Uptown/Edgewater Community.

* Alliance for Community Peace, serving Jenner, Manierre, and
Schiller Elementary Schools and Lincoln Park High School
* Big Brother Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago, serving
students citywide
* Brain Boosters - Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving
the north side of Chicago
* BUILD - Broader Urban Involvement and Leadership
Development, primarily serves West Town, Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Near
North, Belmont, Cragin, Hermosa, East Garfield Park, Uptown but does
outreach to Cook County youth
* Cabrini Connections, serves 7th - 12th grade students living
in the Cabrini Green area
* Centro Comunitario Juan Diego, serves children on the
southwest side of Chicago
* Chicago Youth Programs, working in Cabrini Green, Washington
Park, and Uptown
* Christopher House, serves families in Greenview, Lakeshore,
Uptown, Logan Square, and
Rogers Park
* Circle Urban Ministries, serves the Austin neighborhood on
the far west side of Chicago
* Cluster Tutoring program, serving Chicago's west side
Dime Child Foundation, serving the south side
* Erie Neighborhood House, serving the Little Village
neighborhood
* Family Matters, serving northeast Chicago
* Hermosa Community Organization, serving elementary and high
school students on the near northwest side
* Horizons for Youth, serves youth all over the Chicago area
* Latino Education Alliance, located on the south side, the
organization serves Illinois youth
* McGaw YMCA, serving Evanston, Rogers Park, Wilmette,
Winnetka, and Skokie
* Midtown Educational Foundation
* Minds Matter, preparing students throughout Chicago for the
college application process
* PEAK - The Partnership to Educate & Advance Kids, serving
at-risk youth at its North Milwaukee Avenue address
* Scholarship Chicago, the five-year program works to help
Chicago high school juniors college prep and ongoing programs
* Sunlight African Community Center, serving African American
children on the north side of Chicago
* The Bridge Youth & Family Services, serving children through
age 17 and their families in Palatine Township
* Umoja Student Development Corporation, serving students
through school community partnerships at several schools
* The Tutor/Mentor Connection, serving tutoring/mentoring
programs citywide
About Lawyers Lend-A-Hand
The Sun-Times Judge Marovitz Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth Program supports
one-on-one tutor/mentor programs serving disadvantaged Chicago area youth.
Lawyers Lend-A-Hand awards approximately $200,000 in grants a year to
tutor/mentor programs, recruits volunteer from the legal profession to serve
as mentors and board members for the organizations, and promotes best
practices in the tutor/mentor community.
