 Description

The maps shown on this web site are just a few examples of computer generated maps the T/MC has created to show where tutor/mentor programs are needed, why they are needed, who is already operating, and who could be helping more. Our goal is to make these maps interactive, so that a visitor can enlarge sections of the map and can click on symbols shown to get contact information and web links to the tutor/mentor sites, schools and other information shown on the map. Below is an example of how this system might work. We're now working with a team of talented and dedicated volunteers. We seek business, university and philanthropy partners who value this system, want to use it in their own community, and don't want to reinvent the cost of creating a system that could be used by multiple stakeholders in multiple locations. If you are interested in investing or volunteering time, email tutormentor2@earthlink.net or visit the on-line GIS planning team at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TutorMentor_GIS_Project/

Shooting in Chicago 9-20-01

The Chicago Tribune included a story this week about an 8 year old child who was struck by a stray bullet in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Ave. The story said this boy was the third child shot since the weekend. We think that tutoring/mentoring programs that operate in the non-school hours and offer a wide range of learning activities, can be a way to reduce the violence in inner city neighborhoods. However these programs need more volunteers, more money, more business partners to succeed. Please see the web page in the TutorMentor File Cabinet called shooting_9-20-01.htm to find mentoring programs, businesses, churches and schools in the neigborhood of the shooting. Pick a program and get involved.

This article was put on the T/MC web site in December 2001, following a Chicago SunTimes front page article with a photo of Mark Lane and Ophra Winfrey. This download supports the map image and illustrates how T/MC seeks to follow negative news with stories that lead volunteers and donors to neighborhoods where the news takes place.

Mark Lane Shot

The front page of the 12/12 Chicago Sun Times shows a full photo of Ophra Winfrey and Mark Lane Jr. In 1993 Mark was a co-star with Ophra in the movie, "There are no Children Here". While he survived gangs in the movie, he did not in real life. He was shot two days before Thanksgiving at age 22. There are many Tutor/Mentor programs in the Chicago area where you can offer kids an alternative to gangs.

Child Shooting Map

This map tells a story.
The place where the shooting occurred was at 67th and Stewart. The neighborhood has high levels of concentrated poverty. Two of the public schools in this area were put on the Chicago Public School Probation List in 1997 because less than 15% of reading scores were at the state average.
